The Artist and the Engineer: Ideal Client

I've been saying all summer that, come August, I would send out mailers and really do the real Professional Freelance Illustrator thing. Which I'm working on. One of the things I decided to do was sit down and write out a Business Plan, just to solidify my goals, ideals, etc. When I came to the "Customer" section, there was a little survey about what to think about when defining your ideal client. This was my actual thought process when filling out the questionnaire.

Ha ha, your ideal customer sounds like me with more money, too!

I keep saying to myself "this is the year to...(fill in the blank) with my children's illustration" but I never seem to make much progress. I wanted to start sending out mailers to publishers, but I don't think I'm quite ready yet. However, you are definitely ready! I think it's a great idea to write a business plan, and I wish you luck with getting the word out about your art.

Wow, thanks for your encouragement! I think artists are frequently nervous about putting themselves out there and believing they are good enough, so your comment means a lot. I actually just barely sent out my first mailer last week! I'm nervous but I made a commitment months ago that I would send a mailer in August, and so I had to follow through. For me, that was a good method--giving myself a due date with enough time to get ready, but not so far away that I didn't take it seriously.
