I am currently working on creating an online version of this class. I want to take the time to make it the best it can be, currently I hope to be able to launch it January 2025. If you want to know when the class will be available sign up for my newsletter.
Drawing Fundamentals ClassForget talent! Drawing is a skill that is developed through practice.
In this class, we will discuss and practice different techniques which can help anyone learn to draw, or improve their current skill level–even those who “can’t even draw a stick figure.” Students will learn techniques to improve their perception of the world around them, and then translate that into lines on paper. They’ll also learn basic artistic vocabulary and apply it in discussion and practice. At the end of this course, students will have a solid artistic foundation for creating beautiful representational art, as well as an improved understanding and perception of the world around them. |
Drawings by students who have taken the class

This class focuses on the fundamentals of learning to draw. That means that students who have never learned to draw well are more than welcome--this is the perfect class to get started! However, drawing fundamentals are great to practice even for more accomplished artists. I've had students who are already competent in drawing take my class and get a lot out of it. Some have even taken it more than once, in order to continue improving on their fundamental skill set. Above are just a few examples of drawings produced by students in this class. You can see a range of skill levels represented there. All skill levels are welcome!
NOTE: This is not a children’s class; it is aimed at adults and dedicated teens. I think of it as a 101 level class—the very beginners level, but requiring enough maturity and attention span to listen to lectures, participate in drawing exercises, and do some (fun!) homework.
I’ve had a mixed experience teaching teens in this class—those who wanted to be there and were independently interested in learning the material were a great addition to the class. Those who were made to take the class by adults did not do as well. Since community education classes were incredibly important to my own artistic development as a teen, it is important to me to continue to allow teens to sign up for this course. Parents are expected to use their best judgement as to whether their teen is ready for this class.

Recently I put together a youtube video of my (somewhat ramble-y, but hopefully still interesting) thoughts on why I think drawing is a GREAT hobby. The video includes timelapses of a few of my recent sketches.
