A Look of Surprise

I asked all my facebook friends to give me sketching prompts when I was stuck in a drawing rut awhile back. One of the prompts was "a look of surprise." This dragon somehow appeared on the page as a response. I liked him so much I decided to do a colored version.

I noticed that in the original sketch you have a few lines indicating the dragon's wings outstretched, suggesting the dragon returning from flight. I wonder if the wing had been kept it would further emphasize the emotion of the dragon; although, it would take something really alarming to startle a dragon.

I get the impression of something big, but actually there is nothing in the picture to suggest something large, so we use our own knowledge of dragons to estimate the size in our minds.
