I thought of maybe doing a Christmas-related comic, but inspiration didn't strike. And I think anyone who has been married can relate to this.
And since we're away from home, we have an even lower quality image than usual, straight from my phone! Ah well--whatever works.
"Are you drawing all over my harmonics chart?"
"Its your fault! You left a pen next to it!"
The other day, Rich came home with this really cool chart he'd made which, he told me, "explains how music works" or something like that. It was a really cool chart. Which he left on the table. So it isn't MY fault if some doodles showed up on it, right?
What really happened is I realized that I was doodling on his awesome chart (in pen...) and I stopped. And he didn't get upset. But I still felt bad. But... it was paper, and there was a pen, and I'm me... things happen.
By the way, this little comic is completely unedited except for cropping. I drew it in pencil, used a fine tip black marker to draw over it, scanned it, cropped it, uploaded it. I'm going to be completely honest--If these are ever going to go anywhere but my sketchbook, I really have to set the bar low. That list of steps is already getting a bit longer than I'd like, but there isn't really anything to cut. So sometimes, the characters won't look the same from panel to panel. Sometimes, my handwriting is hard to read. Sometimes, I just can't draw. But I've found that, one, making these is something I enjoy, and two, they're something I like to share. But sharing them and even creating them will never happen if I decide that they must be perfect. I've decided to learn as I go--as I create and share and get feedback, maybe I'll get better, and maybe even feel better about committing more time to it.
The last couple weeks I've been going through a book called "The Artist's Way", which is supposed to help people to unlock/regain their creativity. Its for anyone who wants to be creative in any field, not just visual artists.
Anyway, one of the things it has you do is make a list of "other lives" you'd like to have. Like, in another life I'd be a novelist, or a monk, or a marathon runner--just anything else you'd want to do/be. Well, one of the "other lives" I listed was to be a webcomic artist.
So you list these "other lives", and then you're supposed to take time once in awhile to do things from your "other lives". So I made a little comic.
It has been so long since I've just sat down and drawn something for fun... I need to do this more often! I did a lot of doodles and brainstorming until I had the idea for this little comic.
So here it is, pretty much just as it appears in my sketchbook:
