Sometimes, I try new things. Sometimes it goes well, and sometimes it doesn't. This is one of the recent new things I tried. It turned out... OKish. This is fanart for the book we recently finished reading, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. This is the passage illustrated: I guess its my fault for trying to illustrate a scene where the character isn't quite sure what is going on at first. Makes for an illustration where people aren't quite sure what is going on. Ah, well. It was a fun experiment.

Sarah, I think this is very impressive. I love how you drew all the little houses - that would've been so daunting to me! with a few minor tweaks, the image would be more clear. I think the pillar could be smaller, to show that it is far away. Right now, the width of the pillar and the width of the flock of birds in the foreground are about the same size so the eye is drawn to both at the same time. The pillar and the stream of birds are also the same value, so perhaps you could make the pillar part be a lighter black, and the Ravens in the foreground a darker black so it looks like they are closer. I think you could make more of the Ravens separate from the flock as they get closer. You could use more negative space in between birds, or make some of the highlights more dramatic (even though Ravens are black, I know that shiny feathers can have a lot of highlights.) I hope this helps! I think it's worth the effort to re-visit it, because it's a pretty stunning piece!

Thanks for your feedback! I do think some of those edits would help, but I want to take a break from this piece for awhile so I can come back to it with fresh eyes. Maybe in a few weeks I'll upload an updated version if I feel I feel strongly enough about this piece to spend more time on it.

Taking a break is always a good idea. I hope when you see it again, you can see the good things about it, too! Leave a Reply. |
